The development of tourism almost keeps pace with the reform and opening up of thiscountry. Since the adoption of reform and opening-up policy, the main leaders of the partysuch as Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao had put forward comments andsuggestions on the development of tourism, formed their own thought of tourist economywhich played an important role in guiding the development of tourism. The aim of thispaper is to summarize and compare their thought of tourist economy, and on the basis ofthat, to get some thoughts on future development of tourism. This paper sums up the mainconnotation of the three leaders’ tourism economy thought from their speech anddocuments, analysis of the identity and diversity of their thought, and combine it with theexperience and lessons of the development of China’s tourism for more than30years. Onthe basis of this, it sums up some suggestion for the development of tourism in the future.The article has four parts:1. This section summarizes the connotation of tourism economic thought from DengXiaoping, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao. It expounds Deng Xiaoping’s thought of tourismeconomy in three aspects—the nature and positioning of the industry, tourism developmentstrategies and tourism enterprise management. Jiang Zemin’s thought of tourism economymainly includes three aspects: future development and function, the scientific developmentstrategy of tourism and development strategy of some areas. For Hu Jintao’s ideas oftourism economic, it describes that from three aspects—opening, scientific andharmonious development of the macro level, the support measures, the tourismdevelopment of specific region taking Hainan province as example.2. It compares three leaders’ thought of tourism economy, and summarizes the identityof that. The identity mainly manifested in three aspects. Firstly, they are all fully aware theimportant status and role of tourism industry, thinking that tourism is an important industryof national economy and a comprehensive industry. The development of it is conducive toadjust and improve the industrial structure, to promote more people-to-peoplecommunication and play an important role in solving the jobs problem. Secondly, they allpay attention to comprehensive planning which includes playing well the leading role of thegovernment, development based on resources, sustainable development, and paying moreattention to the construction of infrastructure. Thirdly, they place great emphasis onstrengthening the development and management of market and talent.3. This section elaborates the differences of tourism economic thought from threeleaders since the adoption of reform and opening-up policy. The first is the understandingof tourist function and nature, which performances in that the latter pay attention to theeducational function, and realize that tourism is one of the important areas for the expansion of domestic demand. The second difference between the three leaders is theirthought in market structure and the form of product. Their views differ sharply in thedevelopment of inbound, outbound and domestic tourism market, and ideas from singlesightseeing to diversified tourism products. Finally, the leaders keep different ideas on thedevelopment image and measures of Hainan tourism. In fact, the differences in the regionaldevelopment are exactly the process that thought becoming clear and the right positionbeing found gradually.4. On the basis of first three parts, this section outputs inspirations for the futuredevelopment of tourism. They mainly include strengthening macroeconomic control, talentdevelopment and management, scientific development as well as more open domestic andforeign policies of tourism industry and so on.
