The implementation of the new-type urbanization strategyhas broughtnew opportunitiesfor small towns’ rapid development, the translation fromurban-rural dual structure to urban-rural integration offers new power tosmall towns’ rapid development in Chongqing city. The growth divide inthe small towns of Chongqing city proposes the realistic to strengthen thesmall towns variationresearch.Based on the theory of regional differencesand urban-rural relations theory, in combing and summary related literaturefoundation for economic development of the main functional areas andsmall towns, this article put all small towns of Chongqing city into threefunctional areas to give a variationresearch.First, the article gives a full view of all the small towns’ economicdevelopment in Chongqing city, based on this, this study depicts thedifferences in small towns’economic development of different functionalareas from four aspects of the timing differences in stage, leading industry,population scale and spatial density, and analysis on the promoting factorsfrom the historical differences of productivity layout and regional policydifferences, differences in central city diffusion effect, different location,differentnatural and geographical conditions, cultural values anddifferences in human capital. Therefore, the study reviews the small townsof all over the world from four aspects of the timing differences in stage,leading industry, population scale and spatial density to seek internationalexperiences for the development of small towns of three functional areas.Finally, combined with the new trend of economic development of smalltowns in Chongqing City, put forward the countermeasures for the smalltowns of three functional areas:urban development zone can adopt TODmodel to promote the fusion of small towns and core zone; thecitydevelopment zone should focus on cultivatingthe self-organizing abilityof the small towns and break administrative division limit; ecologicaldevelopment zone should foster regional growth pole to drive thedevelopment of small towns, in addition,ecological development zoneshould also lead the transformation of late-starting small towns fromtraditional agriculture town to ecological tourism town to realizetheleapfrog development.
