The blend of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) is an important engineering thermoplastic alloy. PC/ABS systems possess favorable molding fluidity and can be applied for molding larger area and complex products. Furthermore, PC/ABS exhibit good low temperature impact resistance, high heat resistance and light resistance, can be widely used for the framework of automotive instrument panel, the shell of automotive electric devices etc., substituting the metal materials to satisfy the future requirement in automotive industry such as comfort, safety, high speed, energy conservation and environment friendly and so on. With the development of automotive industry, it is forecasted that the alloy dedicated materials will be strongly demanded. As alloy dedicated material, PC/ABS is expected to possess good market prospect.Synthesis of ABS powder is a key component for preparation of PC/ABS alloy, and the properties of ABS itself necessarily influence the performance of PC/ABS. The present work systematically studied the effect of the process of ABS graft-powder preparation on the properties of ABS graft blend. Through optimizing synthesis formulation and process conditions of ABS graft powder, the suitable synthesis formulation of ABS powder was determined.The study of blend formulation of PC, ABS graft powder and SAN resin was conducted. Upon increasing the proportion of ABS graft blend, PC/ABS systems exhibited the decrease in impact strength, yield strength and elongation; Upon increasing the content of SAN in the matrix resin, the above alloy showed the decline of impact strength and elongation. However, the yield strength showed no obvious change, and the velocity of melt fluid was accelerated gradually; Upon increasing rubber content in ABS graft blend, PC/ABS alloy displayed the enhanced impact strength, which reached a certain value and kept stable. Meanwhile, PC/ABS alloy revealed the decrease in elongation, especially, the yield strength and velocity of melt fluid obviously decreased.The effect of process technology for PC/ABS alloy on the mechanical properties was investigated. Through optimizing the process conditions of PC/ABS alloy, the ideal experimental conditions were obtained. For instance, the frequency of main engine was 15Hz-25Hz, process temperature was 220-260C℃etc. The various compatibilizers were applied to improve the compatibility of PC/ABS alloy, and the effect of different compatibilizers on the properties of PC/ABS alloy was investigated. It was concluded that co-existing of SAN-co-GMA and PCL showed favorable compatibility.Based on the determined synthesis formulation of ABS powder, PC and ABS graft powder, the blend formulation of SAN resin and process conditions, PC/ABS alloy was prepared. The resultant PC/ABS was tested and assessed by the authority, and its each index meet the requirement as expected.
