A kind of active materials-sepium (hereinafter referred to as HPX)-which canreduce the burst size of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) in cigarette smoke is selected,processed and refined into a cigarette additive-HPX harm-reducing granule, whichis applied in R&D of new cigarette products after being composited with cigarettefilter. The research determines the preparation techniques for HPX harm-reducinggranule: the HPX is smashed and passes through a sift with80meshes; the powdersare parched, passing through a sift with80meshes and made into HPX fine powdersas mist-spraying granules, after undergoing a rinse in acid, alkaline liquids and water.The modern pharmaceutical methodology, electron scanning microscope and Fourierinfrared spectroscopy are applied to represent the physical properties and superficialstructure of HPX granules. The indicators of quality control on HPX granules andthe optimal condition for filter composition are formulated: grain size:20~60;relative density:1.50g/mL~1.60g/mL; pore volume:1.25~1.4mL/g; specificsurface area:280~380m2/g; pH value:9.5~10.5; CaCO3≥87%; moisture≤8%;soluble dissolved salts≤2%; breakage ratio in the presence of water≤50%; contentof Pb (mg/Kg)≤5.0; content of As (mg/Kg)≤1.0; additive length:14mm; additiveamount:20~45mg/cig; additive position: preposition to the filter. Evaluation ismade on the stability of harm-reduction effect and the biosafety of use: The stabilityof harm-reduction is one year, whereas the experiment of biological use proves to besafe. Tests and analysis are conducted on the harm-reduction mechanism of HPX,which is initially inferred as the effect that the porous absorption retention,neutralization and coordination properties of HPX are integrated to reduce the burstsize of HPX. Result: On contrast against the control cigarette in which the cigarettefilter through which the HPX harm-reducing granules pass is not added, theexperimental cigarette in which the cigarette filter for HPX granules has beencomposited can reduce the burst size of HCN in the smoke by25.26%~52.60%.Being simple, obviously effective in reducing the burst size of HCN in cigarettesmoke, stable, safe in use and low in cost, this method can be promoted and applied in industrial products.
