Research On New Portable Thermal Desorption Instrument

Now, a thermal desorber (or a thermal desorption system) is used at VOCs sampling and pre-treatment. A thermal desorber can help determine the volatile organic compounds and semi-volatile organic compounds. Quick detection and field analysis by portable thermal desorber has been the trends in development of thermal desorber. In this paper, we will focus on a new type of Mini Thermal desorber. The main research contents are as following:In chapter one, the background and purpose for this research were demonstrated, including the definition of VOCs, the source of VOCs, the health effects of volatile organic compounds and how to protect ourselves. And the thermal desorption’s definition and its application is introduced in this chapter. Thermal desorption provides a technique for volatile organic compounds from the environmental samples without solvent extraction.In chapter two, a new type of Mini thermal desorber was designed. And it was compact and low comsuption. It was not only designed for out of lab use, but also for lab use.In chapter three and four, an analytical method for BTEX using Mini thermal desorber and laboratory gas chromatograph or a transportable gas chromatograph and mass spectrum detector (GC/MSD) was developed to check the Mini thermal desorber’s performance. Combining the thermal desorption with a transportable gas chromatograph and mass spectrum detector (GC/MSD) thus provides the possibility of on-site determination of volatile organic compounds in air.The project presented here involves the development of a Mini sample station-Mini thermal desorber. The field analytical system developed was a field transportable GC/MSD interfaced with the Mini thermal desorber. However, the Mini thermal desorption also can be used in laboratory analysis with laboratory analytical instrument.And the laboratory analytical system developed was a laboratory gas chromatograph interfaced with the Mini thermal desorber.
