With the development of economy and improvement of living standards, kitchen garbage increase rapidly in the last decade. Nowadays, kitchen garbage has become an important part of household garbage. Lack of effective treatment would lead to secondary pollution in the form of "drainage oil", "swill pig"and so on. Recently bio-degradation has attracted much attention due to environment favourable and effective treatment as compared to physical methods. Kitchen garbage degraded by microorganism can achieve reduction, innoxious disposal and resource utilization, but due to characteristics of high moisture content and organic matter content, direct composting may cause odor, rodent and pest breeding, and the composting quality will be worse. Therefore, padding is necessary to improve the efficiency of biodegradation by providing microorganisms suitable conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of padding on kitchen garbage decomposition. Kitchen garbage was treated with wood sawdust (birch), rice bran, peat, peanut shell and rice hull to observe the effect of the treatments on decomposition of kitchen garbage by microbiomass. Temperature, moisture content, microbial biomass, weight loss rate were measured during decomposition of the garbage. The results showed that temperature and moisture content was very significant to affect the decompostion. During treatments, high thermal insulation properties were performed by the combine treatment of wood and rice brain as compared to other materials which lose heat rapidly. The treatment with 50% wood sawdust performed the highest weight loss rate and optimum moisture content (50%).
