Recently, coordination complexs (CPs) have attracted a great deal of attentions, owing to their prospective applications as materials for gas storage, heterogeneous catalysis, magnetism, luminescence and so on. as well as their intriguing aesthetic structures and charming topologies. However, it is a great challenge to control the final results of CPs because many uncertain factors affect the self-assembly process, such as the coordination geometry of central metal ions, the connection modes of organic ligands, the kinds of the slelcted N-containing, counterions, and the reaction conditions such as temperature, pH values, solvents, the ratio of reagents and others. The most common approach to build architectures is the rational combination of multicarboxylate ligands and N-containing auxiliary ligands, containng appropriate coordination sites and metal ions bearing a specific coordination geometry. With this background in mind, our attention has been paid to the asymmetric ligand biphenyl-3,4’,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3BPT) and the syntheses, characterizations of eight CPs based on H3BPT and 4,4’-bis(imidazol-1-yl)biphenyl (bibp), 1,4-bis(benzoimidazol-l-yl)benzene (bbp) ligands under solvothermal conditions, namely: [Zn2(BPT)(bibp)(μ-OH)]n (1),{[Cd2(BPT)(bibp)1.5(CO3)0.5]-(H2O)0.5}n (2), {[Co2(HBPT)(bibp)2(H2O)3]-(SO4)}n(3), [Co2(BPT)(bibp)(OH)(DMF)]n(4), [Cd(BPT)(bbp)]n(5), [La(BPT)(H2O)2]n (6),{[Ce2(BPT)2(DMF)2(H2O)3]·(DMF)·(H2O)}n (7),{[Sm(BPT)(H2O)2]-(DMF)}n (8). Among them, Complex 1 has a two-dimensional (2D) looped layer formed by the{Zn2} dinuclear SUBs and the bibp ligands.2 displays a novel (3,10)-connected topology denoting by the [Cd4(COO)e(CO3)] tetranuclear metal clusters. Complex 3 is a 2D network based on dinuclear{Co2} and bibp ligands. Complex 4 exhibits a complicated 3D framework, which can be rationalized as a (3,8)-connected net based on the [Co4(BPT)4(μ3-OH)2]6’ tetranuclear metal clusters. Complexes 5 display 2-fold interpenetrating 3D frameworks.6 and 7 are both complicated 3D framework. In complexes 8, the Sm is nine-coordinated, BPT3- brdged dinuclear units to a 2D double layer. All the complexes are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), IR spectra, and elemental analyses. Moreover, thermal stabilities for 1-8 and photoluminescence properties of 1,2 and 5 have been investigated. The antiferromagnetic properties of 2 have also been studied...
