Taiping Lake is located in Huangshan District of Anhui Province. It is one of the largest reservoir type lakes in Anhui Province. It has been listed as the second batch of national ecological environment protection projects in 2012, and one of the national key protection lakes in 2015. Its ecological environment protection has become a priority in the future. At present, its ecological baseline information is lacking, and the environmental research reports based on phytoplankton primary production are also rare. The last investigation on primary production in Taiping Lake is in 1992, which is also the only time. This study was from November 2012 to October 2014, which studied the primary production and revealed spatial and temporal distribution of primary production in Taiping Lake. We used variance analysis by SPSS 19.0 to results from different sampling sites and different sampling time. And Pearson correlation analysis was used to study the correlation between primary production and environmental factors(eg.WT, Chlorophyll a). A preliminary ecological assessment was conducted by indexes of primary production and Chl concentration. At the same time, we compared our study results with previous study in Taiping Lake, as well as in other reservoir type lakes, discussed water trophic state and potential fishery productive capacity of Taiping Lake. It is hoped to provide basic or reference data for Taiping Lake ecological environment protection and fishery development.1. During the investigation, the average water column primary production of phytoplankton(CPP) in Taiping Lake was 4.65±4.17 g/(m2·d), the variation range was 0.52~18.94 g/(m2·d), and the maximum value of CPP was at H4 in May 2013, while the minimum value was at H3 in Sept.2013. The average water column respirationof phytoplankton(CR) was 5.33±3.87 g/(m2·d), the variation range was 0.45~15.88 g/(m2·d), and the maximum value of CR was at H5 in July 2013, while the minimum value was at H1 in Oct.2013. The average water column net primary production of phytoplankton(CNPP) was-0.68±4.36 g/(m2·d), the variation range was-11.69~11.71 g/(m2·d), and the maximum value of CNPP was at H5 in Sept. 2013, while the minimum value was at H5 in July.2013. The average value of P/R was greater than 1, which showed autotrophic state of Taiping Lake.2. During the investigation, CPP had three peak values which were respectively in Nov. 2012, May 2013 and July 2014. The maximum value of CPP was 7.77±6.30 g/(m2·d) in May 2013. CR had a similar temporal distribution as CPP. CR was high in July 2013 and July 2014, low in Jan, Apri, Oct in 2014. CR was higher in 2013 than that in 2014. CNPP had an opposite distribution to CR.3. The values of CPP of H1,H2,H3 was close, which were respectively 3.20±1.66g/(m2·d), 3.58±2.59g/(m2·d), 2.98±2.35g/(m2·d). The values of CPP of H4,H5 was close, which were respectively 7.61±6.61g/(m2·d), 6.06±3.72g/(m2·d). CPP at H4,H5 was higher than that at H1,H2,H3. CR showed a similar horizontal distribution as CPP. CNPP was negative value at all cites except H4, which has horizontal distribution as: H4>H3>H5>H1>H2.4. During the investigation, Chl a had an average value of 5.88±4.79 mg/m3. There was a small fluctuation of Chl a between Nov.2012 and May 2013, then increased rapidly from July, reached the peak of 14.13 mg/m3 in Sept. Chl a was higher at upstream cites, highest at H1, which had an opposite horizontal distribution to transparency(SD).5. Taiping Lake was judged as eutropher water according to CPP, and as mesotropher water according to the concentration of Chl a. Combining with practical perception, and research results on the plankton done by our lab, it was appropriate to judge Taiping Lake as mesotropher water. According to the primary production data we got and prediction formula in ‘Practical technology of Reservoir Fisheries’ edited by Huazhong Agricultural University, Department of Fisheries, the annual potential yield of silver carp bighead Carp in Taiping Lake is about 2012.8 Kg.6. During the investigation, the average value of CPP was 4.65 g/(m2·d), which grew 74.1% from 1992.
