AES resin is a kind of engineering plastics, which was prepared to improve the weatherability of ABS. The structure of Styrene-EPDM-Acrylonitrile (AES) is similar to ABS. AES resin was produced by the US Copolymer-Rubber Company for the first time, and now the multi-solution polymerization is the main method for its industrial production. It is necessary for the traditional solution method to use a large amount of solvent, yet the dosages of monomer and solvent residue were left in the preparation process in some degree. So the process of separation and purification is rather difficult and complex. The core technology of high content of reactants AES resin production is still mastered by a several large enterprises in the foreign countries and domestic enterprises still can’t grasp it. Therefore, carrying out the high content of reactants AES resin production process is of great importance. In this paper, our work was focused on establishing a homogeneous system; the preparation of AES copolymer in solution and the research into the effect of the process conditions on graft; AES graft copolymer was blended with SAN, and the mechanical properties of the blends were studied. The research of liquid ethylene-propylene-diene monomer graft copolymerization. The main results and conclusions of the research as follows:1. Establishing homogeneous system. The study shows that acrylontrile and EPDM have different polar; single polar solvent or non-polar solvent can’t balance the system of AN and EPDM well. Therefore we use hexane and toluene with the ratio of 1:1.To determine the reasonable reactant content is 50%, at an EPDM content of 20%, the weight ratio of St to AN was 85/15 and 75/25.Viscosity of the solution and the rubber mooney viscosity is directly proportional.2. The preparation of AES graft copolymer. The study manifests that the process of EPDM graft polymeriazation can occur. We can use IR and’H-NMR to prove it. Through the synthesis of AES resin we can find that when the reaction temperature becomes bigger and the amount of initator and TDDM increases, graft ratio and graft efficiency decreases gradually in the graft polymerization. Upon increasing the EPDM content, the grafting ratio increased initially. Active sites for grafting of the rubber phase may help to improve the grafting ratio. And improving the experimental methods, the use of two pieces temperature 80℃and 100℃,can shorten the reaction time.3. Study on the mechanical properties of AES resin. AES resin was prepared by blending of EPDM-g-SAN with SAN resin. The results indicate that the melting time is becoming shorter, while the processing torque is increasing as the AES content increases. The impact strength increases slowly when the EPDM content of the blending is less than 10 wt%. When the EPDM content of the blending is between 15 and 20%, a sharp brittle-to-tough transition is observed upon variation of EPDM content; The Notched Impact Strength of AES resin reaches the maximum value when the amount of TDDM is 1%. The Tensile Strength decreases slightly, and the Elongation at Break increases significantly with the amount of rubber phase increasing.4. When Liquid EPDM was used for grafting, we get some new conclusion. The rubber solution viscosity is only 300cp when the rubber content is 39%. With the increasement of initiator content, monomer conversion and grafting ratio first increase and then decrease. The increasing content of rubber phase is beneficial to the improvement of the grafting ratio,...
