Functionally graded material (FGM) refers to a kind of heterogeneous composite material with gradient properties due to a continuous or quasi-continuous change in its structure and composition. Serving as an emerging kind of biological FGM, dental implant material with functionally graded structure combines excellent mechanical properties and biological properties. So, it has been widely concerned in the biomedical field. At present, exploring new methods and optimizing the properties of dental implant material with functionally graded structure have been hot research problems.In this paper, a new fabricating method of functionally graded materials (FGM) was proposed based on the pulse transfer of powder method. The results include:(1) The atomization mechanism of the pulse transfer of powder was analyzed. The numerical simulation analysis of the powder transfer process was realized by PFC3D.(2) As the core device, the micro-nozzle was prepared. A drop-on-demand (DOD) forming system of FGM was constructed and fundamental experiments were conducted to determine the influence of system parameters on the effects of powder transfer.(3) The structural parameters were optimally designed using ANSYS10.0. The forming process of the dental implant material was conducted through the DOD delivery of powder. And after the consequent work of cold pressing and hot-pressing sintering, the fabrication of the dental implant material was accomplished.(4) The performance of microstructure, compactness, mechanical properties and phase constitution of the fabricated dental implant material were tested, so as to verify the feasibility of the FGM fabricating based on the pulse transfer of powder method.Through the study of the atomization mechanism of the pulse transfer of powder, the construction of a DOD forming system of FGM with its fundamental experiments, the process of fabrication and the subsequent work of performance test, a basis for the further research of this method,applied in fabrication of the two-directional FGM or combined with laser sintering, was provided.
