Schiff-base complexes because of their fascinating variety of structures and potential applications in the fields of luminescence, magnetism and catalysis, become the research hotspots. In this paper, two series of fourteen lanthanide complexes have been designed and synthesized through N,N′-bis(pyridine)-1,2-ethanediamine with various β-diketone lanthanide salts. The structures of these complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallographic studies and luminescencet and magnetic were investigated. The conclusions are listed as following:Complexes 1–6([Ln(hfac)3(L)] [Ln = Nd(1), Sm(2), Eu(3)]; [Gd4(OAc)2L3(hfac)10](4); [Dy(hfac)2(L)]2(OAc)·[Dy(hfac)4](5); [Yb(hfac)2(L)]·[Yb(hfac)4]) were synthesized by reactions of L with the precursor Ln(hfac)2(OAc)(H2O)2 under the same reaction conditions. The luminescence of complexes 2, 3 exhibited characteristic luminescence lanthanide(III) ion. Complexes 6 exhibited characteristic NIR-emitting lanthanide ions.Complexes 1-6, the coordination numbers for the lanthanide ions are declined from 10 to 8. The structures of all lanthanide complexes depend on the ion radius.The reactions of L with Ln(DBM)3·2H2O afforded A series of dinuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln2(DBM)6(L)][Ln = La(7), Nd(8), Sm(9), Eu(10), Gd(11), Tb(12), Dy(13), Yb(14)]. The luminescence of complexes 8, 13 exhibited characteristic NIR-emitting lanthanide ions, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 exhibited characteristic luminescence lanthanide(III) ion. White light emission is obtained by adjusting the ratio of La(III) and Sm(III) ions(CIE,(0.335, 0.310)). Magneric studies indicate complexes 13 and 14 are SMMs.
