This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part: sythesis, structure and properties studies of bis-benzimidazole phenylamine complexes. The second part: the design, synthesis and fluorescent properties of a novel fluorescent probe based on 1, 8-naphthalimide derivative.Benzimidazoles and their derivatives have attracted considerable interest for their excellent properties in chemistry and pharmacology. As a heterocyclic ligand, the large benzimidazole rings not only can provide potential supramolecular recognition sites for π···π stacking interactions, but also serve as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors to fit multiple coordination geometry. In this paper, four ligands of bis-benzimidazole phenylamine and their nine transition metal complexes were prepared. The compounds were characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, molar conductivity, UV–Vis spectra and IR spectra, NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. These compounds are listed as follow:1. bis(benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)aniline(bba) and its complex: [Zn(bba)(Br)2]·2DMF(1)2. bis(N-methyl benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)aniline(Mebba) and its complex: [Cu(Mebba)(Br)2]·2DMF(2)3. bis(N-ethylbenzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)aniline(Etbba) and its complexes: [Cu(Etbba)(Cl)2]·DMF(3) [Mn(Etbba)(Cl)2](4) [Ni(Etbba)(Cl)2](5)4. bis(N-allylbenzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)aniline(Albba) and its transition complexes: [Mn(Alba)(C l)2](6) [Cu(Alba)(Br)2]·DMF(7) [Zn(Albba) Cl2](8) [Co(Albba) Cl2](9)Single-crystal X-ray revealed that: complexes(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(9) adopted five-coordinated modes, the coordinate forms of(4)(5)(6)(9) can be described as distorted trigonal bipyramidal, and(2)(3)(7) the coordination geometry of central metal atom may be best described as distorted square-based pyramidal.(1)(8) adopted four-coordinated modes, the cations of the complexes(1)(8) can be described as distorted tetrahedron. The antioxidant activity of the compounds were determined. The complexes were found to possess potent hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and be better than standard antioxidants like vitamin C and mannitol. Furthermore, complexes(2)(3)(4)(6)(7)(9) possess significant superoxide radical activity. Additionally, cyclic voltammograms of complexes(2)(3)(7) indicate quasireversible Cu2+/C u+ couple. These findings clearly indicate that complexes with benzimidazole have many potential practical applications.Environment-sensitive fluorophores are a special class of chromophore, of which solvatochromic fluorophores such as 1, 8- naphthalimide derivatives, are particularly useful. Because of their strong yellow-green fluorescence and good photostability 1, 8-naphthalimide derivatives have found application in various fields including coloration of polymers, light emitting diodes, laser active media, electroluminescent materials, fluorescence sensors and switchers and ion probes. Herein, we report the synthesis of N-allyl-4-iminodi(N-ethylacetamide)-1, 8-naphthalimide(L), and study the properties of its fluorescence emission. Compound L can be used to design a novel fluorescent probe, which exhibits single fluorescence turn-off signaling behavior for picrate, and is applicable to the environmental pollution and biology.
