The rapid development of urbanization and industry lead to the emission of a large number of industrial wastewater and domestic sewage. The wanton pour of sewage is causing water pollution, which seriously worsened the quality of ecological environment and water. Therefore, a suitable sewage treatment method will be useful for the purification of wastewater rapidly and the alleviation of water contamination. These will not only be good for the development of social economy, but also for human health. One of the main causes of water pollution is the presentation of nitrogen and phosphorus in water. It will causes the eutrophication of water and red tide, which not only worsen the quality of water and threaten the growth of aquatic plants, but also harm the health of human and public safety. The sewage treatment method, activated sludge method, is widely and effectively used for the purification of wastewater. A/A/O, one of sewage treatment methods, has the advantage of simple structure, good operational stability and the capability of removal of nitrogen and phosphorus simultaneously. Furthermore, SBR, another sewage treatment method, has the advantage of small occupation area, low running cost and flexible operation. Both above methods could remove nitrogen and phosphorus effectively. Thus, we compared ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus removal rate of A/A/O and SBR to determine a suitable sewage treatment method for Dalian. In this study, we aimed to assess the effect of two activated sludge(A/A/O and SBR) processes for treating urban sewage in Dalian. The ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus removal in sewage treated with A/A/O or SBR was determined by nessler’s reagent spectrophotometry and ammonium molybdate spectrophotometric method to compare the efficiency of these two methods, which will afford experimental basis for Dalian city sewage treatment. The results showed that the ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus removal were 95.3% and 83.4% for A/A/O, respectively. However, those were 94.2% and 81.7% for SBR, respectively. The data presented in this work indicated that the ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus removal efficiency of A/A/O is higher than SBR, suggesting A/A/O is more suitable for the treatment of sewage in Dalian.
