VOC, volatile organic compounds, mainly from automobile exhaust, coating, resin, adhesive, printing, dry cleaning, petroleum industry and other various types of factories or general household discharged. While the VOC in ink, mainly refers to the ink composition, mineral oil. In the process of ink drying, resin and vegetable oil can be oxidized in the air and stay on the surface of printing, but mineral oil will volatilize into the environment, to form VOC. At present, the whole world ink production has been more than 5000000 tons, annually the volatile organic compounds from inks has reached hundreds of thousands of tons. These volatile organic compounds, can form the greenhouse effect which is more serious than carbon dioxide, and the formation of oxides and photochemical smog in the sunlight, will seriously pollute the atmospheric environment, impact on the health of peoples.In order to cope with the needs of environmental protection, from the late 90’s international community has started to promote the soybean oil ink. Until 2010, the soybean oil ink has occupied the market share of 80% of offset printing ink. However, soybean oil ink still cannot solve the problem of VOC in inks, because it still contain 15~30% of the mineral oils. So, in this context, a pure vegetable oil ink (NON VOC ink), is gradually to the market. Because any mineral oil composition is not contained in the formula, NON VOC ink has achieved zero discharge of the VOC.Although, NON VOC ink has been promoted to the market two or three years, but it has not been widely applied, because of the drying and ink printability problems.This paper aimed at the existing problems of NON VOC ink, provide some ideas and solutions:1) Through the physical parameters of resin, and the experiments of varnish and ink resins, choose a low solubility, low molecular weight for NON VOC ink, this resin can be effectively improve the ink fixation rate and dry, and make the ink good printability.2) Use a type of vegetable oil esters which can meet the requirements of VOC zero emissions, and have similar physical parameters with mineral oil. This solution can solve the NON VOC ink drying speed and other problems fundamentally.3) By further optimizing the varnish production process and ink formulation, determine a new NON VOC ink formulation. The test results show that this new type of NON VOC ink have similar performance with the major offset inks in the market.
