Synthetic paper, also known as plastic paper or film paper, based on polymer resin and inorganic filler as the main raw materials, with adding a variety of additives, is prepared by use of polymer interfacial chemistry and inorganic mineral filling modification techniques. Synthetic paper is a multi-purpose material and a new type of plastic products which has plastic’s and paper ’s characteristics, and not only has writing and printing effects, but also has light weight, high strength, tear resistance, weather resistance, folding resistance and durable and so on.A novel polyurethane based synthetic paper was prepared via wet phase inversion technique and inorganic mineral filling modification technology. The surface morphology and microstructure, mechanical properties, flame resistance, thermal stability were studied by use of modern analytical testing methods. Simultaneously, water absorption, ink absorption, writing and printing performances of synthetic paper were tested either.A single factor experiment of different Ca CO3 content was set up. SEM observation shows that the Ca CO3 particles are scattered throughout the surface and cross-section of synthetic paper, while the agglomeration of Ca CO3 becomes more serious when Ca CO3 content is high. With increasing of Ca CO3 content, the tensile strength and broken elongation are decreased, however, flame retardation shows a trend of certain increase, water absorption and ink absorption are increased significantly. What’s more, it was found that the words written on synthetic paper are still clearly visible after having been immersed into water for a month. As a result, when Ca CO3 content at 60 wt% the comprehensive properties of synthetic paper are best. On this basis, a single factor experiment of different solid content was set up. SEM observation indicates that the agglomeration of Ca CO3 appears and the structure of synthetic paper is compact when solid content is higher. With increasing of solid content, the tensile strength is increased, whereas broken elongation, water absorption, ink contact angle and ink absorption are decreased. As a consequence, when solid content at 40 wt% the comprehensive properties of synthetic paper are best. Above all, the comprehensive properties of synthetic paper are best when Ca CO3 content at 60 wt% and solid content at 40 wt%.Flame retardant synthetic paper was prepared with different inorganic flame retardants and its properties were studied. SEM observation shows the Ca CO3 and flame retardant particles are dispersed on the surface of flame retardant paper, especially, the dispersion of flame retardants are poor when Al(OH)3、APP and Sb2O3 are used at the same time. The flame retardant paper with APP and Sb2O3 has good mechanical properties, water absorption and ink absorption, writing and printing performances, in particular, the flame retardant is best.Due to polyurethane synthetic paper has good properties, such as good writing and printing performances, water immerse resistance and flame retardant, so it will has a wide range of uses in outdoor advertising paper, office paper, books, archives, flame retardant wallpaper, fireworks paper, special paper and so on. Moreover, this study not only expands the application fields of the polyurethane materials, but also provides the reference for the development of organic/inorganic composites.
