Impeller parts, especially the integral impellers play a very important position in industry of machinery and equipment, commonly used as a critical part in various industries, such as aerospace, marine and energy. Due to manufacturing impellers mostly require five-axis machining, especially in machining of free-form surfaces, the process is complex and error-prone. Because integral impellers operate under high pressure and high temperature conditions, the design accuracy and strength are required to reach a much high level, which leads to a higher requirement for the impellers’ design and processing.Five-axis NC machining is widely used in NC machining process of integral impellers. For five-axis NC machine tools, the building of post-processor has become an important task of five-axis NC machining. At the same time, taking advantage of the software for machining process simulation of complex parts is also a necessary step in improving machining efficiency, reducing waste of materials, and avoiding machines and tools breakage. The paper focuses on the integral impellers, in five-axis NC machining studying a number of key technical issues in the generation of process, specifically summarized as follows:(1) Based on checking domestic and foreign literature, make a summary on the overall situation of NC machining of integral impellers introduce the significance of machining process simulation, identify the main research contents and methods of the paper.(2) Consider the NC machining process of turbine type integral impellers as the research object, carry out machining process planning, including the delineation of process stages, tool selection, selection of rough and processing methods. Study the whole process from rough to finish in detail, in the UG/CAM platform achieve the program and generate a cutter path of integral impellers.(3) Analysis the post-processing algorithms. According to five-axis NC milling machining center, make the use of post processing tools--NX/Post Builder which is enclosed of software to build a structure applicable to the post-processor machine, and have the post-processor generate impeller machining NC codes.(4) Create a virtual machine model and tool library files of a milling machine by VERICUT software. The virtual process in VERICUT software verifies the correctness and availability of the post-processing and we make comparison and analysis to simulation results using automatic compare function enclosed of software.This paper introduces machining and simulation of integral impellers by means of milling machines, which makes an important significance for improving machining efficiency and quality of impellers.
