With the constant improvement of the intelligent level, new technologies and new processes has continuously appeared. The technology of industrial robots has been got an unprecedented development. As industrial robots are featured with good flexibility and stability, they are commonly used in the machinery manufacturing to replace humans for the high-quality and high-quantity work in hostile environments, such as welding, carrying or unloading parcels.Centrifugal impellers have gained the wide applications in the field of motive power machine. However, the impellers have hard machining with the complex geometry. The centrifugal impellers machining mainly relies on the multi-axis CNC machine, while the price of those machines is well over a million. The cutting tools and machine tools can be damaged easily because of improper operations, and the high maintenance cost makes it impossible for many enterprises. The paper starts with KR 360-2 industrial robot as the model sample. In order to reduce the enterprise cost, the end-effector on the robot is mounted a motorized spindle with a milling cutter shank in the centrifugal impeller machining so as to extend its availability. The main content is as follows:1. to expand the application fields on the modification of the end-effectorInstead of the end-effector mounted with manipulators, KR 360-2 industrial robot has a motorized spindle with a milling cutter, which allows for easy installation. The simple machining method provides supports for complex parts machining. Meanwhile, the mathematical model is applied here to analyze and to calculate the six degrees of freedom among the foundation, the sliding platform, the movable manipulator and the point of rations on the manipulator, making sure that the structure transformation could meet the reasonable demand of multi-axis machining.2. to complete tool-path generation and post-processing construction under UG softwareThe work-blank of centrifugal impellers is constructed under UG 10.0 software. Next, the tool-path machining of the centrifugal impeller is generated under UG condition. The special post-processor based on KR 360-2 is constructed with UG-post and TCL. Finally, the constructed post-processor is used to post-process every machining tool-path, generating the required NC processing program.3. to testify the multi-axis machining under VERICUT softwareThe machine tool model and the magazine are built, and the related control system is imported under VERICUT software. The generated NC program is simulated to detect the errors of machine tool collision, tool breaking and clamp damage caused by programs or parameter settings. The lifelike emulated interface makes each error clear, and the machining simulation will not keep optimizing the machining methods until the parts for the centrifugal impeller could be correctly machined.
