Ink-jet Printing technology has become more and more mature and ink-jet paper has gained more and more market shares with the development of science and technology. But the current cost of ink-jet paper, especially the cost of the high-grade ink-jet paper, is very high. The main reason is that silica (especially fumed silica) is used as pigment in the coating of the high-grade ink-jet paper. Although the performance of silica used as coating pigment is very good, silica is of high cost and the need of binder is very much. In order to decrease the cost of ink-jet paper, zeolite was used as pigment in the coating of ink-jet paper during this research, and the availability of zeolite used as coating pigment of ink-jet paper was determined by experimental study.Zeolite pigment was used to replace the traditional pigment silica used in ink-jet paper, and the influence of dispersant kinds and dosage, rotating speed of disperser, dispersing time and dispersion liquor concentration on the dispersion properties of zeolite pigment were discussed by using single factor control variable method. The dispersion properties were characterized by testing the average particle size and the viscosity of the zeolite dispersion liquor. The experimental results show that DMDAAC is the ideal dispersant and the optimal dispersion conditions are the dosage 3%, the dispersion liquor concentration 50%, the rotating speed of disperser 5000r·min-1, the dispersing time 60min.Coating of different formulations were prepared by using the mixture of zeolite pigment as fumed silica’s alternative pigment and fumed silica in different rate (the tatal amount of zeolite and fumed silica is 100 parts) and PVA-1788, coating additives to coat the base paper. The ink-jet papers coated by different formulation coatings were assessed by the combination of evaluation method of evaluating the physical properties, surface structure and the print properties of ink-jet paper. The results found that the gloss is highest, the surface roughness is smallest, and the dynamic contact angle is the most suitable for ink absorption when fumed silica to zeolite is 80 to 20. And at this time, the average solid density of four colors is the highest and the respective AELab color difference value of four colors is the smallest. This showed that the optimal rate of zeolite replacing fumed silica is 20 parts, in other words, the dosage of fumed silica at this time is 80 parts.Zeolite pigment was used as the sole pigment used in ink-jet paper, and the influence of PVA-1788, PVA-1799, carboxy styrene-butadiene latex on the properties of ink-jet paper were discussed by using single factor control variable method. The properties of ink-jet paper were characterized by testing the physical properties such as whiteness, opacity, gloss, roughness, dynamic contact angle and the print properties such as solid density, CIE L*a*b* value, color difference AELab* value of CMYK. The experimental results show that PVA-1788 is the best binder among the three binders used in ink-jet paper based on zeolite pigment, and the optimal dosage of PVA-1788 is 20 parts relative to 100 parts absolute dry zeolite pigment.
