As the demand of environmental protection continuously increased, restrictions of the sulfur and phosphorus content in petroleum became more and more strict.Oil with low sulfer content became an urgent need for production. In this paper, firstly, four kinds of octamolybdates were prepared and were applied in extraction coupled with catalytic oxidation desulfurization systems to remove sulfur compounds in fuel oil or lube base oil. Secondly, three molybdenum-based room temperature ionic liquids were synthedized and studied as lubricating oil additive, which showed good tribological performance. Based on those two studie, a new type of lubricating oil with low sulfur content may be obtained. The details were as follows:1. A series of N-alkyl imidazolium octamolybdates were synthedized and were characterised by FT-IR and’H NMR.Some physical properties, such as the melting point, solubility and thermogravimetric (TG), were also studied. Those obtained compounds were used as catalysts in extraction coupled with catalytic oxidation desulfurization systems with H2O2 as oxidant and room temperature ionic liquids or organic solvents acetonitrile as extractants. Effect of different factors on desulfurization, such as amount of catalyst, oil/extractant ratio, oxygen/sulfur ratio, temperature and time, were also studied. Desulfurization efficiency towards dibenzothiophene, benzothiophene, thiophene and real oil (150SN, gasoline and diesel) were investigated under the best conditions. Finally, product of catalytic oxidation was identified by FT-IR and the mechanism of extraction coupled with catalytic oxidation desulfurization was also discussed.2. Three molybdenum ionic liquids (methyltri-n-octylammonium molybdate, double dodecyl methyl ammonium molybdate, l-butyl-3-methylimidazolium molybdate) were synthedized and characterised by FT-IR and 1H NMR. Its tribological performances as additive in different base oils were examined on a four-ball tester. The PD values, PB values and WSD were examined under different concentrations of additives in the mixed base oils. The results showed that molybdate exhibited excellent anti-wear ability and extreme-pressure performance.
