Since the 1970s, Polymer microspheres have received great interest due to their variety of synthetic methods and wildly application. Different sizes of polymer particles have successful obtained by various kinds of polymerization. Different sizes and properties polymer particles have been successful obtained after years of system research. Hollow polymer microspheres, due to its special structure, become a hot research topic in the field of polymer in recent years. Hollow polymer microspheres have excellent light shielding properties and flexibility, can be applied to such as biological monitoring, cosmetics, drug controlled release, leather coatings, and information storage, etc. The synthesis mechanism and process to prepare the hollow microspheres are examined and characterized in this paper, the main research content are as follows:In the synthesis of core-shell structure polymer microspheres, different kinds and dosage of the cross-linking agent has a great influence on the stability of emulsion. When different crosslinking was added in nuclear and shell, the cavity of the hollow microspheres will be clearly different. The use of emulsifiers change the dispersed of monomer in the water phase, and then change the structure and morphology of microspheres. The excess of emulsifier can lead to deformation of microspheres and produce irregular geometry. The shell monomer quantity is different due to the core-shell ratio which will lead to the different thickness of shell lay, it will effect alkali swelling or alkali/acid swelling, and then produce different degree of hollow and sizes of the microspheres.Through seed emulsion polymerization in the synthesis of core-shell structure directly produced hollow microspheres, avoiding the post-processing steps, also avoid the introduction of other substances. In the synthesis of core-shell microspheres, hollow structure formed directly through seed emulsion polymerization, avoiding the multifarious post-processing steps and the introduction of other substances. Using hydrophilic and hydrophobic of the polymer (core and shell) and swelling effect of shell monomer, the swelling of nuclear layer and the stability of shell lead to hollow structure formed the special double shell hollow microspheres. In order to ensure effective swelling of the nuclear layer, a certain amount of shell monomer amount is necessary. Meanwhile different dosage of DVB produce different hollow structure due to its swelling of linear polymers.The properties test of polysulfide sealant indicate that polymer microspheres, which were used as fillers of sealants, had enhanced mechanical properties of sealant and decreased density of sealant self. With the increasing of the microspheres amount, the polysulfide rubber mechanics were enhanced and the density were decreased. After exceed a certain ratio, the effect on mechanical properties slowing down, and then appeared rapidly improve until maximum amount. Therefore, the material can be used as a filler of polysulfide sealant.
