In china, straw is a major source of agricultural waste. At present, it was mainly used for fertilizer or biogas fermentation, the utilization of straw resource is very low. Therefore, using the straw resource in the process of wastewater treatment is not only able to carry out the utilization of agricultural waste, but also to reduce the processing costs, with very important significance to environment and economy.We made corn stalk activated carbon as the main object of study, ammonia and sodium carbonate were selected as chemical modifier, and their respective optimum conditions for modification were obtained by carrying out the orthogenesis tests. The characterization study was made and the influences of adsorption time, p H, dosage of modified activated carbon, initial concentration on the hydroquinone removal were studied. The results show that:(1) Under the conditions of ammonia concentration of 15%,modified time of 8h, and reaction temperature of 15℃, the best adsorption capacity was obtained. The adsorption capacity increased from 41.25mg/g to 77.5mg/g. Meanwhile, sodium carbonate concentration of 1.5mol/L, modified time of 6h, and reaction temperature of 15℃, the adsorption capacity increased to 68.75mg/g.(2) The specific surface area test and FT-IR analysis show that the activated carbon which modified by ammonia, specific surface area increased form 25.9107m2/g to 72.128m2/g,the nitrogen containing functional groups had increased;the specific surface area of sodium carbonate modified increased to 80.496 m2/g, the carbon containing groups had increased.The average aperture of modified carbon was reduced, the number of moderate holes had increased a lot.(3) The activated carbon which modified by ammonia,the removal of hydroquinone had significantly improved. The removal were increased with the elevation of adsorption time and carbon dosage,but was decreased with the increase of the initial concentration of it.Under the condition of pH=7 was more conducive to the adsorption of hydroquinone. The Freundlich model could reflect the adsorption behavior of it,the correlation coefficient was 0.9992. The secondary dynamic model was more suited to describe the adsorptio n behavior of hydroquinone, the correlation coefficient was 0.9901.(4) The activated carbon which modified by sodium carbonate,the removal of hydroquinone had significantly improved also.
