Phenolic compounds are important chemical materials and intermediates, also are byproducts of many industrial enterprises. They are in the list of priority control pollutants, which is listed by the U.S. environmental protection agency (EPA). Wastewater containing phenol is listed as one of the priority control pollutants in our country. Phenols exists in the environment widely, they are the detection of organic pollution and the priority monitoring of persistent organic compounds in china, phenol have been included in the list of cancerogenic substances. Therefore, how to treat the phenol-containing wastewater effectively and to protect human survival environment preferably has become an emergency problem at present. There are many methods to deal with phenol-containing wastewater at present, such as the physical method, chemical method, biological method and electrochemical method. Normally, physical and chemical method is suitable for high concentration phenol wastewater, the biological method is suitable for medium and low concentration of wastewater containing phenol. These methods have advantages and disadvantages and are difficult to achieve the goal of stabilization safety from the perspective of comprehensive control. Therefore, Fenton oxidation has attracted much attention because of its particular advantages. As the development of environmental science and technology, the research of Fenton oxidation has been focused on the technology of improving oxidation efficiency in recent 30years. However, economically viable separation technology of iron ion is not available in industrial application, which may induce the generation of iron mud and high processing costs. In order to solve the actual problem, we use the activated carbon which modified by organic acid as the carrier to load Fe2+. The experiment results show that the oxygen-containing functional group of activated carbon which modified by organic acid is higher than activated carbon which modified by inorganic acid. The amount of iron ion can be reduced by the reutilization of activated carbon. It has been proved to be a convenient-operating, environmental benign and low-cost method in this paper. The work explored the efficiency of treatment of phenol-containing wastewater by Fenton’s reagent using activated carbon modified by organic acids. The study showed that the treatment efficiency of the oxidation system using the catalyst of Fe2+loaded activated carbon with organic acid is better than inorganic acid such as sulfuric acid. The results of the characterization of catalyst shows that activated carbon modified by EDTA is better than other acids in terms of the capacity for Fe2+ We selected salicylic aldehyde wastewater as processing object in the application of the catalyst and obtained a good effect. We made a complete processing technology for the salicylic aldehyde wastewater and achieved some economic benefits.
