The study which use liquorice and salvia miltiorrhiza as the matieral research the effects on whitening skin activity of different ratio of liquorice and salvia miltiorrhiza. The results determined the ratio of liquorice and salvia miltiorrhiza. Then, we study on the activity of antioxidation, tyrosinase inhibition, stability and skin irritation. At last we study on the application on whitening cosmetics(1) Free radical scavenging capacity of extracts of licorice, salvia and different ratio of the two herbal medicine were studied and evaluated in two reaction systems, DPPH system and superoxide anion free radical system. Inhibitory activities against tyrosinase of these extracts were measured through colorimetric method with L-tyrosine as substrate. Mixed extracts were obtained through a series of ratio of licorice to salvia (1:0,2:1,1:1,1:2,0:1), and clearance rate of superoxide anion free radical of these mentioned extracts in turn were as follow:40.7%,49.9%,37.1%,37.3%,22.3%; and also inhibitory activity against tyrosinase of these extracts in turn were as follow:20.7%,16.7%,12.6%,4.9%,0.2%.(2) Active performance of compound extract(ratio of liquorice to salvia miltiorrhiza is 1:1) was studied. Firstly, compound extract’s stability was studied through DPPH method, result showed that factors of temperature and UV-light had no impact on compound extract’s stability. Compound extract’s anti-oxygen property was studied through DPPH method and superoxide anion method, result showed that free radical clearance increased with the increase of compound extract’s concentration. Compound extract’s whitening property was studied through the tyrosine enzyme inhibition method(in vitro) and cell biology method, result showed that compound extract of liquorice and salvia miltiorrhiza could restrain the activity of tyrosinase and reduce the generation of melanin. Compound extract’s irritation to human skin was studied with human skin fibroblast and keratinocyte, results showed that compound extract could enhance metabolism and soften the cuticle with no irritation.(3) Finally, compound extract of liquorice and salvia miltiorrhiza was added into whitening cosmetics, and its whitening property was studied through in vivo method and 3D skin-model method. Results showed that skin cream with compound extract could enhance the water content of skin keratinocyte, resist UV-light and reduce the content of melanin in skin, which indicated that cream with compound extract had excellent moisturizing and whitening property.
