Study On Relation Between Garden Building And Furniture Of Soochow In Late-Ming Dynasty

The late Ming dynasty is described as a special period in history, which political environment deterioration lead to literati spirit corrupted and unprecedented economic prosperity result in extravagant consumption trend. In this period, cultural fusion bring great breakthrough in philosophy. Literati from south regions abandon traditional concept of paying more attention to principles than to tools, then, active in constructing landscapes and designing furniture, communicate with craftsman, write books and publish theory. SuZuo garden building and SuZuo Ming-style furniture as zenith of Chinese traditional building and traditional furniture domain respectively, reached great achievements under lots of influences in the late Ming, meanwhile, their development paths are closely connected.In this study, we use SuZuo private garden building in the late Ming dynasty and SuZuo Ming-style furniture which act as major displays in the gardens as object, apply induction and comparison to compare and analyze their relationship, expound their types and traits. In this paper we discussed their relationship in the following aspects. First, research the common influence factors at their development process, from the perspective of builder analyze the unity of their design philosophy and design ideology. Second, after summarizing primary crafts and forms of garden building and furniture, compare and analyze the relevance of their crafts and forms from the following aspects:textures, crafts, shapes, structures and decorations. Finally, conclude display mode of furniture in the garden building space, sum up the general rules of display mode, analyze the digestion types of furniture occupying building indoor space.SuZuo Garden building and SuZuo Ming-style furniture in the late Ming dynasty has close relationship. On the one hand, the prosperous garden building promotes the development of Ming-style furniture. On the other hand, the progress of the craft and design theory of them is always coincident. The relationships of them present at the following aspects.1.Both garden building and SuZuo Ming-style furniture affected by the literati and craftsman from south regions, and they have lots of common traits at design philosophy.2.The close relationship between carpentry work and joinery work result in the high conformance at texture and craft of garden building from SuZuo regions and SuZuo Ming-style furniture.3.Garden building and SuZuo Ming-style furniture have lots of similarity or uniform in the practice, we can see the references and imitation between them.4.The harmonious and unified display layout of SuZuo Ming-style furniture in SuZuo garden building space make them inseparable as a whole.
