Design Research Into Fabric Seats With Collage Artistic Characteristics

The art of collage has been around for a long time. Due to unique expression styles of multielement, co-existence, randomness and borrowing, it has been widely accepted and used by designers in various fields. The design style coming into being in the form of artworks has been integrated into the product, sculpture and architecture field through continuous improvement and application of artists and designers, gaining increasing popularity.Proceeding from the art of collage, this paper adopts fabric seat design as the research object. Through analysis and summary of the art of collage, the author attempts to integrate it into fabric seats so as to design more beautiful and personalized seats. The aim of this paper is to improve the concept application scope of the art of collage, change the artistic nature of the appearance molding of fabric seats and increase the added-value of spiritual aesthetics for modern fabric seat products.During the theoretical research process, the concept of "collage", "art of collage", "fabric seat" is put forward, analyzed and studied. Through site investigation and data collection, corresponding theoretical researches are summarized; the feasibility of applying the art of collage to fabric seats and the causes are analyzed; two characteristics of the art of collage applied to artworks are boiled down into constitutive characteristic and aesthetic characteristic from the perspective of the art field; the artistic style of collage in fabric seats is discussed and specific examples are chosen for further analysis; five characteristics of the art of collage in fabric seats are pointed out, namely diversity of materials, diversity of fabric shapes, flexibility of color matching, creativity of pattern combination and artistry of collage types. Based on fabrics, colors, patterns, forms and process of the fabric seats, five design principles are concluded, namely principle of green design, principle of aesthetics, principle of coordination, principle of creativity and principle of manufacturability, are put forth. Based on these design principles, specific corresponding design methods, such as piecing, repetition, collection, decomposition and reconstruction, are summarized.During the practical design process, this paper works out a fabric seat design plan with artistic characteristics of collage and makes practical items based on the theoretical basis provided in the former part. On the modern seats design, it points out that the fabric seats with collage artistic characteristics is a rare innovative way to the modern furniture design.
