Study On Large Mining Excavator Appearance Design

For a long time, the construction machinery industry has been an important pillar of our national infrastructure investment. Because of the increasingly competitive international market, a large number of foreign companies begin to improve the industrial design theory into the field of heavy industry. They create products with extremely superior performance and very unique structure, and send them to the Chinese market, which has brought great shock to domestic heavy machinery industry, for Chinese heavy industry has always pay its attention into the technology part, instead of concern industrial design. So in order to establish the brand image among the consumers and improve competitiveness in international markets, we must pay great attention to the industrial design and improve our product appearance.This paper mainly focuses on the study of the appearance design of the large mining excavators. And commissioned by the Taiyuan Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., we design the appearance of the WK55 mining excavator. The main contents are as follows:Firstly, the developments of domestic mining excavator and research background are studied to explain the importance of mining machineryenterprises using industrial design into the product development. Then a detailed analysis of the requirements given by Taiyuan Heavy Industry for the mining excavator design is made.Secondly, a detailed research on the mining excavator and its situation in domestic and foreign market is made. Then we analyze the existing appearance characteristics and its possible future trends. By using the method of extracting the modeling gene, we summarized the characteristics of the brand of the Taiyuan Heavy Industry Co., Ltd.Thirdly, we put forward the integration method between industrial design and engineering design, aesthetics principles, appearance color design strategies and make the intention product analysis on the mining excavator,and apply the result into the actual design. Finally we determine the appearance design through two business-reviews and multiple design iterations.Finally, we design the product display page for the company basic on the UI design principles, and use the page to display our mining excavator appearance design to get users’ feedback. Then we analyze the result and summarize our work.Above all, this paper not only analyzes the importance of industrial design to the mining machine industry, but also puts forward more specific design theories and applies the theories into the design practice, and proves its feasibility through getting feedback from users. This paper provides a useful summary of the theory and practical experience of appearance design for the mining excavator and even heavy machinery industry.
