With the development of the computer and advanced manufacturing technology, the CNC engraving machine industry has been booming in recent years. However, the engraving machine at home is uneven in quality. On the one hand, high-end CNC engraving systems equipped with parametric curve interpolation function can ensure the high precision and high quality in complex curve machining, while whose prices are also high. On the other hand, the traditional CNC engraving systems are equipped with linear interpolation and circular interpolation functions only. In spite of low price, the machining results under those low-end CNC systems are far away from satisfactory. Therefore, developing a set of cheap CNC engraving system under the premise of high machining quality becomes a good wish for individuals and small enterprises.To cope with the problems mentioned above and meet the application requirements for an enterprise in Guangzhou engraving patterns on the surface of its products, a set of economical high speed and high precision CNC engraving system is developed. In the aspect of algorithm, a novel method based on path optimization and interpolation algorithm is proposed. For achieving machining precision and high-efficiency, the original contour is reconstructed to some extent by fitting desired micro line segments into cubic NURBS curves and embedding circular arcs in sharp corners. With full consideration of machine mechanical properties, the interpolation algorithm including recursion and linear acceleration/deceleration strategy is applied to determine the interpolation points and their speed. In the aspect of system hardware, a set of three-axis gantry machine tool and its control system is set up, which can satisfy the demands of the vast majority of plane processing. In the aspect of system software, a programming software for NC code optimization is developed by Visual C++ 6.0. The software receives a series of cutter locations generated by the CAM system firstly, and then makes post-processing offline based on the proposed algorithm. Finally, the software outputs a txt file contains optimized NC code to Mach3 CNC system for machining.In order to verify the reasonability and superiority of the proposed algorithm, the logo is machined under the developed CNC engraving system. The results demonstrate that the system can effectively improve the machining efficiency and machining quality.
