The terpyridine derivatives are widespread researched in the field of organic electrochromic materials due to its rich colors and unique molecular structure. In this thesis, 10 ester-modified terpyridine compounds were synthesized and characterized. Using them as ligands, 20 complexes were synthesized and characterized. The electrochemical, electrochromic, and optical properties of these compounds were investigated. The specific research contents are described as follows:In Chapter One, the off-color materials were outlined. The definition and electrochromic mechanism of electrochromic materials were explained. Organic and inorganic materials electrochromic were introduced. The research progress of electrochromic materials was summarized, and several typical electrochromic materials applied in real life were listed. The electrochromic device(ECD) structure and the practical application were brief discribed. The research progress of terpyridine-based organic electrochromic materials was summarized. Finally, the reason for why we select this research topic was explained. In Chapter two, five ester-modified terpyridine compounds(PETPs) were successfully prepared using commercially available 4’-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2, 2’: 6’, 2"-terpyridine and five carboxylic acids as the raw materials. The chemical structures of PETPs were confirmed by 1H NMR and 13 C NMR. Using these compounds as ligands, a series of organic metal(Ru(Ⅲ), Co(Ⅱ)) complexes were synthesized and characterized by mass spectrometry(MS) and FT-IR. The electrochemical, electrochromic, and optical properties of these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis absorption spectra. The results demonstrate that the cycle stability of these compounds needs to be improved. In Chapter three, five ester-modified terpyridine compounds(BAZTPs) were successfully prepared using commercially available 4’-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2, 2’: 6’, 2"-terpyridine and five alcohols as the raw materials. Their chemical structures were confirmed by 1H NMR and 13 C NMR. Using these compounds as ligands, a series of organic metal(Ru(Ⅲ), Co(Ⅱ)) complexes were synthesized and characterized by MS and FT-IR. The electrochemical, electrochromic, and optical properties of these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis absorption spectra. The results demonstrate that BZATPs-Co(Ⅱ) complexes show good stability. In chapter four, the main results and conclusions of this full article were summarized, and some expectation of this research is given for further investigation.
