Manufacturing is a basic industry of the social development. However, it brings a large amount of resource consumption and pollutant emissions. Machine tools represent a country’s level of the mechanical manufacturing development. With the acknowledge of the sustainable development and its application in the design of machine tools, western countries is putting forward higher requirements for the sustainable performance of machine tools and erecting stricter green trade barriers. Since the sustainable performance of a machine tool is mainly determined in its design stage, it is very important to select the optimal design scheme by the quantitative evaluation of sustainable performance of different design schemes. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the factors comprehensively and thoroughly which affect the sustainable performance of machine tools, and to establish a sustainable design index model(SDI model) to quantitatively evaluate the sustainable performance of each design scheme.Key design factors which affect the sustainable performance of machine tools are analyzed from four aspects: environment, economy, society and technology. Then a sustainable design index system is established, and it can reflect the integrity sustainable performance of machine toolsBased on the index system, a sustainable design index model is established to evaluate the sustainable performance of each design scheme. The comprehensive model is consisted of a data standardization processing part, an index weight calculation part, a weight correction part, a data synthesis part and a reference value correction part.Based on the VBA and Solid Works API, a sustainable design index plug-in is developed which can be integrated in the Solid Works software environment. This plug-in can calculate the sustainable design index value of each design scheme and intuitively display the result. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the sustainable performance of two design schemes for a spanner machine tool are made in this paper. The quantitative evaluation result shows that the sustainable performance of scheme B is 78.55% better than scheme A. The quantitative evaluation result acquiring by the SDI model is not only similar to the qualitative one, but also is more detailed than the qualitative, which indicates the feasibility and rationality of the SDI model.
