Since first free N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) was isolated by Ardengo in 1991, the study of N-heterocyclic carbene metal complexes has had a fast development. This kind of carbene complexes of all metal in periodical table have been reported. Researchers discovered that catalytic activities of N-heterocyclic carbene metal complexes in some reactions are better than those of phosphine-metal complexes, and they exhibit better stability to heat, water and air in comparison with phosphine-metal complexes. Therefore this field has become a hot point of organic chemistry in the recent years. There are a few studes on photophysical behavior of N-heterocyclic carbene metal complexes. In order to expand their applicable range, anthracene, benzimidazole or biphthalene groups were introduced to the precursors of this kind of carbenes. We have studied the syntheses, crystal structures and flourescent properties of below some N-heterocyclic carbene silver-, copper-and mercury-complexes with benzimidazole chromophore.
