Research On Dragonboat Race Space Of Lingnan

The cities of China nowadays are undergoing great changes during the process ofmodernization. Based on the social transformation and globalization, the landscape of thecities and towns tends to be similar, which leads to many "lost places". The main causes ofthis phenomenon are the lack of geographical features and the fracture of the cultureconnection branch. Under this circumstances, to show regional cultural characteristics byurban landscape design is particularly important, especially in the Pearl River Delta regionwhich the speed of economic development and urban construction are leading the country. Forthe Lingnan water village which was born on this land, the dragon boat race that originatedand grown in the crisscross river channel is undoubtedly the best representative of itscharacteristics and culture. Not only has this region had long historical foundation, but also ithas a natural environment for dragon boat race. The developing dragon boat race has becomea living landscape perfectly combines the geographic feature with the inner requirements oflocal people. Nowadays, the Chinese traditional dragon boat race had widely spread all overthe world. At the same time, an appropriate space will promote the development this sport.This research aim and meaning of this thesis is trying to evoke the life memory of Lingnanpeople by analyzing the dragon boat race, and rebuild the geographical and culturalcharacteristics of Lingnan, which provides a better environment for dragon boat race throughthe space research. The combination of dragon boat race and the space illustrates the cultureshift in space study and the space shift in culture study.Basing on research status of multidisciplinary theory, including the urban sociology,human geography, phenomenology and environmental behavioristics, this thesis uses space asthe main perspective and embodies the basic information and field research cases collected bythe writer. It analyzed the origin, the development of dragon boat race, the activity process,rituals and the related space of this game. Meanwhile, the writer presented the traditionaldragon race of Guangzhou in detail, discussing the space construction and the related racingarea. The thesis investigated the feasibility and importance of spatial design of dragon boatrace in Lingnan, summarized and provided design suggestions to the space which depends on the waterfront space design elements at last.The research result is not aim to raise a dragon boat race space design model. It prefersto provide a newly design path for rebuilding the urban landscape of Lingnan on the level ofcity design through the combination research of this traditional sport and space study.Meanwhile, it can promote the related space development and give references to the similarspace design.
