With the development and progress of human society, the demand for energy is sharplygrowing. But limited fossil fuel dwindling, and the environment pollution is increasinglyserious. So photovoltaic(PV) power generation technology is becoming one of the mostpromising. Battery in the PV power generation system is a connector between generation andelectricity. It has an irreplaceable role, and battery failure and limited life have become one ofthe reasons to hinder the system to promote. Therefore, besides improves performance of thebattery itself, we should improve the method of charging according to the characteristics ofthe PV itself. And make the battery charging efficiency, fast, nondestructive, and implementcondition monitoring for battery. It has very important significance for the promoting of PVpower generation systems and the development of intelligent managementThe characteristics of PV cells, and battery charging theory are studied in the paper at first.Then the concept of PV pulse charging based on charge transfer is put forword. The batterycharging process is controlled according to the state of storage capacitor’s charge. With themethod the polarization of charging process is reduced and heat accumulation could beeliminated. And the battery can be charged effectively when the sunlight is weak. In theaspect of condition monitoring, a digital power monitoring method based on integral circuit isdesigned. Hall current sensor detection part, integral part, pulsing part, and integral capacitordischarge part is included in the design. With the design, a certain power is corresponded tothe output of each pulse, and the power statistics can be achievied by the pulse counting.PV charger prototype with the PIC18F2550as the controller is set up in the paper. And abattery state monitoring system which composed of upper computer and lower computer isdesigned. The PIC18F4550is used as the core of lower computer, and the information of PVvoltage, battery state, average voltage, current, and power are collected and uploaded. Theupper computer is programed by LabVIEW. and the function of communication, dataextraction, analysis, storage, query is equipped. At last a PV experiment system, whichinclude PV chargers, battery state monitoring system, battery, and load, is constructed. Thedata basis to improve the control strategy of the PV charger and achieve the battery intelligentmanagement is provided.
