As the power grid system is getting larger and larger, and more complex than ever, it’sdifficult for the power company to control every node’s voltage in order to meet the demandof reactive power/voltage balance on the overall, even the regional power grid. Thus it isnecessary to partition the power grid and take hierarchical control system, which is of greatadvantage to the operation of the grid. On one hand, hierarchical control system costs lesstime, which means faster reaction. On the other hand, it can reduce the influence amongdifferent regions. The problem is how to partition the power grid to different groups while thedegree of coupling among different classes is the minimum. This paper focuses on the partition algorithm based on electrical distance and clustering. Two kinds of reactive power/voltage partitioning models are introduced and analyzed. Amethod of choosing the numbers of classes based on statistical parameter and the convenienceof practical operation and management is introduced. Then the models are tested on theIEEE30nodes system and a method of dealing with the PV nodes is studied.
