With the rapid development of transportation industry in recent decades, a major changehas occurred on traffic load information and features. In order to gain further insight into theimpact of traffic load on infrastructure, it is vitally necessary to conduct systematicinvestigation and study on traffic load. For this research, measured traffic load data collectedfrom several typical regions are used to carry out a through and careful study on traffic loadfeatures as well as to establish traffic load model that can reflect actual traffic conditions,which has great significance for determining designed vehicle load standard and highwaybridge safety assessment.This paper focuses on the investigation statistics and analysis of traffic load andextra-heavy truck load of multi-regional highway bridges as well as the derivation of fatigueload spectrum. The main contents are as follows:1. A precise and reliable investigation methodology, capable of recording detailed trafficload information, is presented. All critical parameters of actual traffic load can be collectedutilizing WIM system and automatic video recorder in combination with manual survey.2. Using the theory of probability and mathematical statistics method, a comprehensivestudy on normal vehicle load of Hebei and Zhejiang Province is conducted based onone-month traffic load data. A comparative analysis of traffic load characteristics of this tworegions has also be conducted. In addition, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test has been conducted forseveral important parameters, such as vehicle speed, time interval, axle spacing and axleweight, to determine the probability distribution function of these parameters.3. In comparison with existing research on traffic load, the highlight of this paper is thata systematic and careful investigation and analysis on extra-heavy truck load of highwaybridge is conducted for the first time. Based on all extra-heavy truck load data collected fromHebei, Shanghai and Zhejiang Province, a comparative analysis of extra-heavy truck loadcharacteristics of this three regions has be conducted.4. Based on the S-N fatigue curve and the Miner theory, fatigue load spectrum for shortand medium span highway bridges in Hebei and Zhejiang Province is derived from statisticaldata of traffic load. Fatigue damage caused by different fatigue truck has also been calculatedand analyzed.
