Reinforced concrete frame structures are widely used in engineering construction in ourcountry nowadays. It has good seismic performance and its layout is flexible. It is a structuresystem that take the load together,who is made up of frame beam and column. However, thereis excessive uneconomic phenomena in frame structure seismic design,because of theinfluence of many factors. The frame column is an important force of frame structure. Thatthe cross section of the frame column designs economically and reasonably has an importantsignificance to the economy design of the whole structure. Through the application of valueengineering theory to frame column in the paper,we know that the dosage of rebar is the mainfactor affecting the function and the cost of seismic design. The methods frame columnseismic design are improved in the paper,and verified by an engineering example.As a new emerging theoretical system, value engineering research the value of productand engineering and reduce the cost of them from the angle of the combination of technologyand economy,which has gotten good technical and economic results. Through the applicationof value engineering theory to frame column in the paper,we know that the dosage of rebar isthe main factor affecting the function and the cost of seismic design. Therefore, the methodsto reduce the dosage of rebar reasonably on the basis of meetting the demand the structure isone of the effective ways to increase its value. Through the research on frame column sectionseismic design, four schemes are putted forward. The paper shows that:the factors impactingthe area of rebar including the method of design(Symmetrical reinforcement method,Asymmetry reinforcement method, ξ extremum method, Confined concrete method),theintensity of materials. In the above factors, ξ extremum method not only reduce the cost ofrebar,but also easy to operate, can be used as the preferred design method. Confined concretemethod also can reduce the cost of rebar and provide good ductility, so it can be used for thehigh ductility of frame column.This paper shows that: In the process of seismic design of frame column in the framestructure of component, can achieve the goal of optimization to by the application of valueengineering.The conclusion of this paper can provide reference and basis in the process of frame column aseismic design for the structural design department.
