With the rapid development of hypersonic vehicles at present, the design of thermalprotection system became the main technical constraint and key point in the hypersonicvehicles design. Combined with the research status at home and abroad, the research oftypical hypersonic vehicle of aerothermal environment prediction, the common thermalprotection material preparation and evaluation, the thermal protection system design andvalidation are given in this paper. The research are carried out with the experiment inshock tunnel and arc wind tunnel in CARDC, and the aero-heating environment areobtained with the numerical simulation software of AHENS and engineering calculationsoftware ofAHEAPS.Firstly, through the aerothermodynamic test in shock tunnel, the thermalenvironment distribution and the heatflux on typical location in the surface of the vehiclemodel are gained, which provided the data support for the numerical simulation andengineering validation. The aeroheating environment of the vehicle in shock tunnelexperiment and flight condition is simulated using the software of AHENS, with themethod of solving three dimensional Navier-Stokes equation.by finite volume methods.And then, the thermal environment of vehicle is calculated by inviscid surface streamlineand strip theory using the software of AHEAPS. In this method the complex-shapedvehicle is separated into the body and local of wing etc. based on thought of componentdisassembly. Compared with the data of tests, the validation of AHENS and AHEAPS areconfirmed. The aeroheating of typical complex shaped vehicles are estimated andanalyzed.Secondly, the common thermal protection material preparation and evaluation areintroducted.And the partition design idea of the hypersonic vehicle is presented briefly.Thirdly, according to the thermal environment of different positions of thehypersonic vehicles, the thermal protection system scheme is formed. And theeffectiveness of the scheme is validated in arc tunnel.From the perspective of design method research, the method adopted in this paper iscommon, and covers all the steps of thermal protection system design of hypersonicvehicles, which can be used in other common hypersonic vehicle thermal protectionsystem design.
