Traffic delays at signalized intersections are an important evaluation index oftiming plans and service quality. It not only reflects the running efficiency of the roadnetworks, but also reflects the logical of signal control and design. Most traffic delaymodels at signal control intersections are not formulated according to the differencesof all approaches, but a single approaches, which were applied to the two-phasesignalized intersections. This paper presents the traffic delay analysis models offour-phase signalized intersections, which is verified by the actual data of road traffic. The main contents of this paper include:(1) This paper analyzes the vehicles movement characteristics of arrival process, depart and blocking process under the non-saturated condition and the saturatedcondition at signalized intersections. The traffic delay model unde r the initial phaseand the non-initial signal phase at four-phase signalized intersections are proposedand deduced. It shows that the traffic delay of four-phase signalized intersections notonly closely related to the queue length of the vehicle, but al so related to parametersof signal control, vehicle arrives distribution and the headway.(2) By using of field data and presenting the calculation process, the operabilityof the traffic delay model was shown. Which is not only to the expansion of the tra fficdelay models of forefathers research, also has provided the new mentality for thetraffic delay in future studies.(3) The last chapter takes the example of two kinds of four phase signal controlintersection to calculate the vehicle delay by the model. The calculation results arecompared with the calculation results of HCM2010and spot sample method, whichvalidated the practicability and accuracy of model of this article, and it provides atheoretical basis for the optimization of traffic signal con trol system of urban traffic.
