The pantograph contact strip and contact wire of electric railway constitute a pairof special friction at high speeds and current-carrying condition. The wear behavior isa tribological problem under the coupling function of multiple factors. Existingspeculation of current-carrying wear mechanism basically relies on the traditionalmorphological characterization of wear surface and wear debris, yet seldom to takeadvantage of multi-scale micro-structural characterization of the carrier to explain thewear mechanism. At present, few of these studies have the in-depth study of the causeof arc and the anti-arc mechanism. In order to overcome existing deficiencies due totheir own slide materials to meet the high demand of high-speed electric locomotivesand heavy on the pantograph-contact line relation, in this paper, the imported purecarbon slide on active duty is studied. Through characterization of the Wear surfaceand debris, we deeply investigated the Arc erosion wear mechanisms, carbonaceousmaterial arc erosion model and arc suppression measures. Based on this, wedeveloped a new type of Cf/Cu-C pantograph contact strip material. The mainconclusions are as following:(1) The wear mechanism of carbon strip/Cu under pure mechanism is mainlyabrasive wear and delamination wear. Under the condition of current-carrying, theincreasing temperature will make the strip graphitized and oxidized. The wearmechanism is principally arc erosion wear and abrasive wear. In the mean time,various other wear mechanisms are also strengthened.(2) The carbon materials on the wear surface of carbon slides will gasify andsublimate under the function of arc erosion, and will be attached on the surface offriction pair during further wearing. The wear mechanism is oxidation and ablation.Through the sublimation and decomposition of arc extinction oil, it can form aninterrupter micro-zone, which broke the equilibrium of energy and ion maintained byarc, thus weakening the arc erosion.(3) Each interface of the Cf/Cu-C has good combination. The bulk resistivity is10.16μΩ m, lower than imported pure carbon slide and domestic carbon slides. Thecompressive strength and flexural strength are289MPa and123MPa respectively,which are higher than the pure carbon strips and the Cu-base powder metallurgy stripmaterials. During the process of Current-carrier friction, the current stability of Cf/Cu-C is superior to the pure carbon strip, and the wear rate is between that ofdomestic carbon strips and imported pure carbon strip. The wear mechanism ofCf/Cu-C strip/Cu is chiefly arc erosion, oxidation wear and adhesive wear.
