In recent years of automatic generation control (AGC) system with interconnected area increased, the system model complexity has greatly increased, the coupling system, a load disturbance area will cause the entire interconnected power system frequency change. In the research, the established mathematical model of system state variables has said that as a result, a lot of control strategy is difficult to achieve ideal control effect. After electricity market reform at the same time, in the new environment, the automatic control system will be bigger and more sudden load disturbance, the nonlinear factors must be considered. In addition, under the network environment of AGC system, the limited communication bandwidth, network delay and packet loss should also be taken seriously。In the networked environment the automatic generation control system is a multi-variable and strong coupling system. With the characteristics of nonlinear and parameters uncertainty traditional control can not offer satisfactory result. So a sliding mode control based on networked automatic generation control has been studied in this paper.Firstly, this paper introduces the background, fundamental, the control goal and process of automatic generation control.Secondly, based on the study of sliding mode control, a sliding mode controller is used on the automatic generation control system.Then, in order to research on network system AGC control, the paper analyzed the network of the main problems in the AGC system, especially the network delay problems. Basis of sliding mode variable structure control, the sliding mode controler used in four areas of AGC system, and use the Maltab/Simulink simulation study, comparing with conventional PID control effect.At last, on the basis of the theory studying, frequency control effects of conventional AGC system and improved AGC system are contrasted by simulation study of four-area system. It is proved that the sliding mode controller has stronger ability to resist fluctuation and a better frequency control performance.
