In the development of Railways, the security and efficiency are two important and immutable goals. Existing rail signal system can’t completely guarantee the safety of trains. Any small error may cause unpredictable consequences. The proposer of the train tracing and approaching precautionary system is just based on this condition. This system is independent of existing rail signal system, it can offer an additional auxiliary collision avoidance information for an safety operation as a kind of the collision avoidance system. The whole system consists of the ground equipment, on-board equipment and wireless communication equipment. On-board equipment, an indispensable part of the system, can offer the sensor data for train location. It can also send the train status information real-timely for the warning system and receive the safety warning information. Then display the information to the driver in the form of interface.This paper chooses the on-board equipment for the train tracing and approaching precautionary system as the research object. This paper establishes the research status of the on-board at the first, then it point out the disadvantages of present research and propose efficient optimization schemes. According to the optimization of the on-board equipment, this paper mainly depends on two sides, the demand of the maintenance and the improvement of the wireless communication function.To meet the demand of the maintenance, we firstly study the record and management of the logs, and offer a useful method for them. Secondly, we design the method which can upload the logs to ftp remote server by using wifi. By downloading and analyzing the logs on the server, we can grasp the status of all the function modules of the on-board equipment. To improve the wireless communication function, we realize the use of3G network, then give the method of wireless communication handoff to meet the demand of the train tracing and approaching precautionary system on the different lines.Based on the research and designing work above, the tests in the laboratory and the field trials on the Shanxi Coal Transportation Company railroad field are carried out in the paper, which include the wireless communication, the management, upload and analysis of the on-board equipment logs. And the feasibility of the optimization of the on-board equipment is analyzed and verified.
