It’s a common concern problem of urban traffic congestion in today’s society, which brings inconvenience increasingly affect the socio-economic development and people’s daily lives. Intersection is the main distribution point for urban road traffic; it’s the key nodes which affect the traffic congestion. On a reasonable analysis, guidance and control of Intersection traffic flow, is an effective means and ways to ease traffic congestion, it’s the key entry point of urban transportation research. Along with the development of traffic signal control, a single point signal control and trunk control cannot meet the complex traffic control problems which caused by the increasingly congested traffic, gradually formed into a piece of congested areas. Small area intersection group constitutes is the key traffic areas of urban road network, the feature of small area intersection group is that have a dense road traffic, greater relevance intersection, traffic discrete small, it’s key to enhance the urban area traffic control performance on the control of small areas intersection group. Therefore this article will be starting with a small area intersection group, researching on the area control of urban traffic, focusing on the optimal control method of a small urban area intersection group.This article combined with the current research status at home and abroad urban traffic control, according to the strong correlation traffic characteristics between the small area intersection group, started from the path correlation of the adjacent intersections, established division model of small areas critical path, formed the basic control unit of the small area intersection group; Through to elaborates on the traffic signal control parameters and traffic signal optimization control theory, it analysis the evaluation of the traffic signal control, clears the optimization control objectives of small areas intersection group, takes a different optimal control method for different line groups, it puts the critical path as the main control object of the small area, proposed multi-objective optimization control model for the critical path, optimize the objective function for the total delay time and the number of vehicles stranded for intersections, using Green Wave for non-critical path control method to supplement optimization of the small area intersection group; Finally, it solves the optimal control model based on the improved genetic algorithm; and uses the simulation software VISSIM to simulate the feasibility and rationality of this method.Through division the critical path of small area intersection group, it identifies the main road carrying traffic of the small area; it effectively improves the traffic efficiency for the optimal control of critical path; by the simulation of VISSIM, it effectively proves the effectiveness of the control method; it has some improvement of the control for congested areas.
