Air filter which is located at the intake system of an engine is one of theessential components of the engine, and its purpose is to filter dust and otherimpurities in the air entering the engine. Heavy vehicle air filter is one kind of aircleaner element dedicated to heavy trucks, military vehicles or construction vehiclesthat require large amount of air at work. Filter industry has always been a problemthat how to maximize its ability to filter impurities without increasing its pressuredrop between import and export. This paper carries out three-dimensional simulationanalysis to a subsection air filter for heavy trucks based on currently popular methodof CFD numerical simulation. From that, it can detailed simulate internal flow fieldcharacteristics of the air filter including its pressure and velocity fields, providing atheoretical basis for enterprises to improve the optimization of the air filter for heavytrucks.Firstly, this paper introduces the current situation of filter industry at home andabroad, the domestic research status of air filter for heavy truck and the researchprogress on test bench of the air filter, then presents the purpose and the mainresearch content of this paper.Secondly, it plans a heavy truck air cleaner by experience design method, anddesigns air cleaner housing parameters, screw cover parameters and filter elementparameters which interacts and impacts each other after a comprehensivecomputational analysis. It builds mathematical model of the air cleaner for heavyvehicles based on CFD equations and a three-dimensional simulation geometrymodel with SolidWorks platform after comparing other modeling tools in this paperand generates a three-dimensional unstructured computing grid for its flow field byANSYS ICEM. It simulates detailed the internal flow field of the air filter by Fluentafter selecting porous media model for paper elements in air filter and determininginitial and boundary conditions. And at last in this paper, it displays the internal flowfield of the air filter by pressure contours and velocity vector distribution maps and gets the distribution rule of the velocity and pressure fields.In the end, it does some experiments in the paper including flow resistance test,filtration efficiency test and ash storage capacity test on air filter technologyparameters by air filter performance test bench. By comparing the results ofsimulation and experimental study, it shows that the spiral track can cause the gasflow swirl and separate dust particles from the gas stream, so as to improve filtrationefficiency of air filter, extend the life of the filter assembly, increase maintenancemileage and upgrade air filter assembly have been installed and so on. It may also beconcluded that it will become an important means of filter structure design by usingCFD to optimize the design of filter.
