The rapid development of social economy and the acceleration of urbanizationprocess, making the number of vehicles increased dramatically. It is very important toapply urban traffic signal control system to alleviate congestion and improve road networkcapacity. Practice and experience has shown that the signal control is the most effectiveand the most commonly used method in urban traffic management. But when the city mainroads set the single point of intersection signal control, the vehicles will often encounterstops occasionally, driving off, which cannot make the road network efficient and safe,under this condition, coordinated signal control system plays very important role in solvingsuch problem. Therefore, the implementation and design of coordinated signal control(green wave control) have great significance to improve the urban traffic problems.Coordinated signal control is a system linking the adjacent traffic signals tocoordinated control, which is in order to reduce the vehicles’ stop on the intersection,especially the vehicles on the main roads can get through smoothly. This paper is based onthe theories and methods of coordinated signal control, and on the basis of the main street121of Kunming as research background, we analyzed the main issues of the street with theresult of survey data about every intersection’s geometric characteristics, traffic volume,traffic speed, etc. And in accordance with the single point of intersections which have beendesigned to determine the system cycle, split, then applicating "graphical method" to getthe cycle and other parameters, completing the “Green Wave” control on the main street121. After designing of green wave control systems, respectively, we evaluate the signalcoordinated control program from two aspects between quantitative analysis andqualitative analysis.By designing the green wave control system of the main street121, the basic processand the key of issues are summarized. Then the relevant indicators comparison shows that,after use green wave system, the average delay is lower than before so that proving itssuperiority in the way of traffic management. Finally, the following conclusions wereproposed: When designing the green wave control system of the main street121, thecalculation of the relevant parameters show that, the theoretical utilization of green wavesystem on each intersection exceed90percent, achieving desired objectives and requirements; The evaluation index of the system proved that, by green wave system to beeffective on the main street121, leading to greatly reduce the number of parking as well asvehicles queuing shortened, and the saving of annual cost is considerable, making greatcontribution to our society and our country; Green wave control system has a greatsignificance and positive effect on the improvement of urban transport problems.
