Nowadays, there is a growing demand in electricity power, while the serious pollution caused by fossil fuel combustion makes the contradictions of energy and environment become increasingly prominent. The percentage of the renewable energy in the total power production is bound to aggravate, but its introduction would increase the complexity and insecurity of the current power system. Developing efficient, clean energy storage technology is the key to solving the bottleneck of renewable sources development.In this paper, the isothermal process and adiabatic process of gas compression are analyzed from the thermodynamic point. Reference to the foreign researches of isothermal compressed air energy storage, a novel isothermal compressed air energy storage is proposed.Combining with the linear reciprocating characteristics of linear motors and the advantages of pumped storage, like high efficiency, mature thecnology, etc, this paper proposes two new implementations of storage.For the implementation in which liner motor used as generator and motor directly, the mathematical models of gas compression system and permanent magnet linear motor are analyzed. The different control strategies of the energy storage and power generation are researched. The system simulation models of energy storage and power generation stage are established in MATLAB/SIMULINK and the system simulation work is done. Waveforms of the simulation results verify the feasibility of the control strategies.The implementation of virtual pumped storage, in which, liner motor used as motor only, is calculated and analyzed in detail combined with an example, and the system simulation work is done. Waveforms of the simulation results verify the feasibility of the control strategies.Finally, the two different implementations of using linear motor in isothermal compressed air energy storage are summarized, and their application areas are analyzed. And the future research is also forecasted.
