Traditional villages and historic district is historical relics, which has high-value in areas of historical, cultural and scientific. At present, the common way of protecting Chinese traditional villages or historic district is tourism development. It is considered a perfect pattern to meet people’s spiritual pursuit after material life is good enough. With era evolving urban spatial exits periodic changes, however, the structure of living space has been a major component. Protection and development of traditional villages and historic districts should first consider reserving the residential function by improving rural infrastructure and restore the original spatial settlement patterns appropriately.This paper focuses on research and analysis seven domestic traditional villages or historic district, understanding the evolution of their history, the scope of protection, format layout features and the different perspectives of businesses, occupants and managers. Reserving living function is more important than restoring environment morphological and developing tourism resources. It is conflicting if we ignore this fundamental characteristic and excavate absolutely unique historical features or spatial form texture. Finally, proposing the boot program about two models of residential function reservation.Rundown neighborhood needs developing. We should integrate the reserved ratio of local development history and architectural space, the proportion of indigenous residents. Mining tourism resources on the basis of recovering inhabited environment and rural vitality to supply funds continuously. Note that attracting tourists is not the ultimate goal of historic preservation and tourism development is not the only driving force of rural settlement continuity.
