To measure the deformation of rock-soil mass, the sensors are usually buried in the rock-soil mass in geotechnical engineering. The data obtained from the sensors are generally discontinuous and different from the real properties of the rock-soil mass due to the limited amount of sensors and the differences of the mechanical properties between the rock-soil mass and the sensors. The study of the transparent soil is based on the above background. The visualization of the internal deformation of transparent soil can be achieved with the help of high speed camera and the digital image analysis technology. The deformation of the transparent soil can be measured continuously and non-intrusively, which overcomes the shortage and disadvantage of the traditional measuring method. Based on the studies of previous literatures, the following researches are included:(1) Though a serial experiments, the refractive index of two kind of inorganic solutions (CaCl2.2(H2O).. CaBr2) and three kind of inorganic solutions (mixture of15#white mineral oil and environmental solvent EI, mixture of15#white mineral oil and environmental solvent SI, mixture of15#and3#white mineral oil) are measured with the variations of temperature and concentration (for inorganic solution) or fraction of volume (for organic solution). The average and variation of dispersion of all candidate fluids and the viscosities of some of the candidate fluids are also tested. By comparing the different pore fluids, the mixture of15#white mineral oil and environment solvent El is selected to make the transparent soil with the fused silica.(2) The absorbance of the mixtures composed of the same solid particle (fused silica) and pore fluid with different refractive index are tested. The experiment result shows that the geometry shape of the particles and the degree of the refractive-index-matching both affect the absorbance of the mixture. The effect of transparent also is also affected.(3) A set of consolidated drained (CD) triaxial tests and unconsolidated undrained (UU) triaxial tests are applied on the mixture composed of the deair water and solid particles (fused silica or sand), and while only the UU triaxial tests are conducted on the transparent soil (which pore fluid is mixture of the15#white mineral oil and environment solvent El). The CD test results show that there are similar stress-strain relationship such as dilatancy between the fused silica and the sand. The results of UU test show that the properties of the pore fluid affects the characters of stress-strain of the fused silica. There is higher strength and shorter time to arrive the peek value when the pore fluid is organic solution compared to that of water.
