The side slope is natural or artificial steep hill. It is the most common form of mountainrailway engineering construction. As the needs of Chinese economic development and theurgent need of improving the people`s standard of living, high slope of mountain railway willoften bring slope disasters, such as collapse and landslide. It is a serious threat to nationalsecurity and the security of people`s life. Throughout the domestic and abroad, the slopedisease causes very serious loss. With the railway network to further improving in China ofwestern mountain area in recent years, there is a lot of problems relate to side slope. It isnecessary to take the corresponding testing method to guarantee the safe operation of therailway.Because of nondestructive testing technology have the characteristics of fast, nondestructive, low cost and can provide the various parameters and required informationquickly, it has more and more widely used in the detection of various engineering structures.Geological radar is widely used in the detection of various engineering structures because ithas the characteristic of nondestructive testing, especially in the detection of hidden structuredisease, such as cutting slope body. Geological radar detection technology has an advantagein terms of other engineering detection methods. Because the geological and climateconditions, or construction work and other reasons, it cause the slope soil is ease to have ahole or appear disease such as less dense soil, which seriously affects the safety of slope. It isvery necessary to detect the disease and make the right interpretation of using geologicalradar. In this paper, the development history of geological radar is summarized. In theunderstanding of electromagnetic wave propagation theory and the working principle ofground penetrating radar, it is demonstrated that the use of geological radar to detect slopesoil is feasible. At the same time, the paper also introduces method of processing the data ofgeological radar and its interpretation, using GprMax in studying two-dimensional and threedimensional simulation. The circular and rectangular holes are respectively arranged intwo-dimensional simulation, electromagnetic wave incidents from different direction of thesame model, finally, we obtained two2D geological radar images and analyzed comparatively. In the3D simulation, we set a square hole in the middle of the model, and ultimately get thethree-dimensional geological radar image, combined with the method of interpretation ofgeological radar image, we have a certain understanding to reflect the different shape defectsin geological radar image. Finally, combined with the results of GprMax simulation, we interpret the imagesobtained from Zhongwei permanent way depot, and make a correct evaluation of the quality of cutting slope engineering.
