In the residential design of steel structure,H-shaped steel generally used in thestructural system, this would make the column widen than the wall in the room, occupysome interior space and affect the appearance of the building. Engineers designed aSpecial-shaped steel column to solve this problem. For example, the corner column canuse L-section,the side column can use T-section and the middle column can usecrisscross-section.So,the research on the Special-shaped steel column can improve thebasic research in the field of steel structure. The paper researches the bearing capacity ofSpecial-shaped steel column and used it to the residencial building.Through the buckling analysis on the L-section steel column prove that theengineering design formula is reasonable. The formula for stability curve are gained andare compared with that of the code. We have also done some buckling analysis for theimproved L-section steel column to get the ultimate load.Because of the asymmetric cross section, the mechanical and seismic performance isnot clear. But the study are basically on the common section of the column, the seismicperformance of Special-shaped steel column are rarely involved. So we use the finiteelement analysis software to establish the H-shaped frame, L-shaped frame and improvedL-shaped frame structure to make the modal analysis and time-history analysis. Bycomparing parameters of these three structures, such as vertex acceleration, maximumfloor displacement and inter-story shift ratio, combined with the standard aseismaticperformance evaluation. Finally, several problems for Special-shaped steel column required more in depthresearched are put forward and expectations of it are made.
