In recent years, some high clearance buildings emerge increasingly such asgymnasiums, convention centers and theaters along with China’s high speed economydevelopment, therefore, it’s in great need that to prevent the preliminary fire fromexpanding in the sites mentioned above due to the fire risk inherent with combustiblematerials in those buildings. The automatic sprinkler system, featured with thehigh-efficiency fire suppression and low cost, comes to be a significant facility incontrolling preliminary fire and applicable to various industrial and public buildings.Nevertheless, it is not insofar as today that China’s current fire codes provide theapplication requirements of sprinkler system for high clearance buildings.This article, oriented to the characteristics of China’s high clearance buildingsand the shortage of prevention and suppression methods for such buildings, carriesout the application research on sprinkler system on this issue. By means of practicalinvestigation, theoretical analysis and entity experiment, the article studies on thesprinkler system’s activation performance and fire suppression capacity.The article surveys on the combustible material and its distribution in highclearance buildings from domestic and overseas, and also investigates the automaticsprinkler system facilitation and its present application status. Relied on the seriesresearch conclusions, the article sets up the fire experiment model alternative to highclearance buildings, and also initiates the12m,16m and18m high clearance full scalefire experiments respectively for the first time, and provides the sprinkler systemdesign requirement applicable to high clearance buildings.Taking practical building construction for examples, the article analyzes the pros and cons ofdifferent fire system and provides the engineering parameters for application. The researchfindings are available for guiding and standardizing China’s sprinkler system design andapplication, and will be of significance to improve the sprinkler system technology and resolve thecontradiction between the development of high clearance buildings and their fire risk.
