Nowadays, reinforced concrete structures and composite structures are widelyused in high-rise and super high-rise buildings. In contrast, few steel framestructures with center supporting system are used in practice. Due to insufficientapplications and research, steel frames with hybrid supporting system of center andeccentric supporting, which have good structural properties and seismicperformance, have not yet been extensively developed.Tongying Center, a typical super high-rise building with seismic precautionaryintensity of8degrees, was adopted as an example to investigate the performance ofsteel frame structures with the hybrid supporting system. The linearly elasticresponse spectrum analysis and dynamic time-history analysis were conducted toassess the structural characteristics of the structure under small earthquakes andstrong winds. The conservative response spectrum analysis and nonlinear time-history analysis under medium and severe earthquakes were also conducted toevaluate the effect of the steel frame, center and eccentric supporting systems,respectively, on the structural stiffness, load-bearing capability and ductility. Basedon the results of the linear and nonlinear analysis, performance-based seismicdesign was achieved and the performance objectives determined.Design value of wind load was determined via comparison of the staticanalysis and dynamic analysis following the design code. The horizontal humancomfort under wind load and floor human comfort under vertical loads were alsoinvestigated via time-history analysis.Several important problems in design of the hybrid supporting system werediscussed and suggestions for the design given. These include effect of reinforcedconcrete stair plates on the steel frame with hybrid supporting system, structuralproperties of the stairs, stress analysis of the floors under wind and earthquakes,and beam-to-column connections suitable for the structural system.Based on the design and investigation, some proposals for design of the steelframe-hybrid supporting system were presented, suggestions for improvement ofsome provisions and some un-clarified issues in the current design codes weregiven, thus providing useful reference for design and applications of this structural system, as well as for further research and applications of the eccentric supportingsystem.
